​SRJO winds up its year-long recognition of the 100th birthday of the legendary bassist, composer and band leader, Charles Mingus. From his famous years as member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, to his emergence as a prolific composer, recording artist and civil rights advocate, we present his most loved works, including Goodbye Porkpie Hat, Haitian Fight Song, and Nostalgia in Times Square.

Join SRJO in a centennial celebration of one of jazz history’s most prolific writers: composer, arranger, trumpeter and band leader Thad Jones. From his early years as a soloist in the Count Basie Orchestra, to his co-founding of the Village Vanguard Orchestra—and beyond—Thad brought us many of the most durable works in jazz, such as A Child Is Born, Three and One, and The Elder.

We are very pleased to welcome flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny to our stage. Acclaimed for his warm tone, soaring lyricism, and and masterful technique, Matheny has been lauded as "one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation" (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Matheny vaulted onto the 1990s jazz scene as a protege of jazz legend Art Farmer. He has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and has over 100 recordings to his credit along with 12 albums released as a leader. 

​

Favorite selections will also include Desafinado by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stormy Weather by Harold Arlen, and Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson, plus special pieces from Dmitri's acclaimed 2022 album "Cascadia."

​

We'll also welcome "rising stars" from local high schools to join us on stage and strut their stuff!​
