SRJO "Smalltet" Plays Monk and Miles

Saxophonist Michael Brockman, co-artistic director of Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, leads a small ensemble (the SRJO "Smalltet") of all-stars drawn from the larger SRJO in a live-streamed concert from the Kirkland Performance Center on Thursday, July 30th at 8:00 PM.  The performance is a tribute to Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, two jazz titans who collaborated often and helped pioneer the Bebop jazz style. This performance is presented as part of the "KPC at Home" series, being held throughout the summer months during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Background music will be playing before the concert begins, and "signing in" to one of the three social media services might be required.

 

Featured in this concert will be compositions by the great Thelonious Monk, including his famous pieces, "Misterioso," "I Mean You," and "Bye-Ya" plus two Monk compositions that were featured on the album Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants, "Round Midnight" and "Bemsha Swing." Band members include SRJO's regular drummer, D'Vonne Lewis, and SRJO saxophonist Alex Dugdale, plus two other Seattle superstars that have recently performed in the SRJO: pianist John Hansen and bassist Michael Glynn.

Michael Brockman is the co-founder (along with drummer Clarence Acox) of the SRJO, which is currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary Season. He moved to Seattle in 1987 to join the faculty at the UW School of Music, and was recently inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame. D'Vonne Lewis appears all around the Seattle region and has won numerous awards for his playing, including "Instrumentalist of the Year" in 2018.  Alex Dugdale is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, and appears with numerous groups in Seattle including his own group, Fade. John Hansen is among the most in-demand performers in our city, and appears regularly with trumpeter (and SRJO member) Jay Thomas, singer Kelley Johnson, and many other groups in Seattle. Michael Glynn is also among the most in-demand performers in our city. He began his study with the great Buddy Catlett (former Count Basie and Louis Armstrong bassist), and has performed with numerous jazz legends that include Bud Shank, Jon Hendricks, Dave Grusin, Seamus Blake, Eric Alexander, and Benny Green.

 

SRJO is the three-time winner of the "Concert of the Year" award from Earshot Jazz, and is preparing to announce its 2020-21 subscription series that will include concerts with international stars Christian McBride and Joshua Redman sharing the stage with the SRJO.
