Featuring special guest saxophonist, flutist, composer and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master, James Moody. Back by popular demand, Moody joins the SRJO for a concert of original works written during his years with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and for his many appearances with Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Thelonious Monk, and others.

The SRJO welcomes internationally renowned, award-winning composer, pianist, and NEA Jazz Master Toshiko Akiyoshi to lead the SRJO in a concert of big band works from her many years touring the globe with the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band. Born in Manchuria, Akiyoshi took up jazz as a teenager in Japan, coming to the US in her 20s to immerse herself in the sounds of Basie and Ellington. She became the first woman named "Best Arranger and Composer" by Down Beat magazine, and has recorded over 45 albums with a refreshing view of the art of jazz. Her appearance is presented with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and Earshot Jazz.


Tribute to Stan Kenton

The SRJO plays a concert tribute to Stan Kenton, one of the most innovative composers and band leaders of the 20th Century. Kenton's unique sound as a composer and band leader emerged during the 1950s as part of the West Coast "cool school" that combined contemporary European techniques with the harmonies, improvisation and swinging beat of jazz. Featured works include Artistry in Rhythm, Opus in Pastels, The End of a Love Affair, Intermission Riff, and selections from the Cuban Fire Suite. As a special highlight, guest soloists from award-winning high school jazz programs in the Seattle area will be featured.
